Kaif (vs) Yuvi

After all those articles on Rahul (vs) Saurav bouts, the friendly Indian media now seems to have turned its attention elsewhere, seems to be bent on starting a new series - the Kaif (vs) Yuvi bouts. Both of them are young and talented enough to be on the tabloids for a very long time.

After all the articles on how good a test batsman Kaif could be and how his name would be the first to be jotted down on the team-sheet for tomorrow's game, (The Hindu - Chance for Kaif to cement his place in Tests, Hindustan Times - Kaif gets a berth in India's Test team) there comes an article saying that Yuvi is a certainty for the opening test ( The Telegraph - Yuvraj set for Test comeback ). Kaif deserves to be playing tomorrow, but Telegraph seldom gets it wrong. If both of them play tomorrow, then it would mean that poor Gambhir has been made the scapegoat.

On current form, Kaif is slightly ahead of Yuvraj. But in terms of 'claim' to the middle order berth, Yuv has a prior claim. He was doing well there when the team management forced him to open(with probably an assurance that it would not be counted against his middle order prospects, as we all have learnt from VVS' case).

So, he opened in Chennai against Aus..and Kaif played in the middle, and did well. Therefore, when it was time to choose one of them in the next game, for the middle order berth, Ganguly found it difficult to drop Kaif, given his good show in the previous inning. He had to unjustly leave out Yuv for the game.

So, now once again considering the middle order berth, Yuraj is higher up in the queue.

If he plays, it shows that the team management does not pay over-emphasis on ODI performance for test prospect, and rightly so(IMO). Since India has been doing well in tests, despite poor ODI showing, for some time now.

Whoever plays, either way, its good for us...and the team..that they get good chances, good scores and build confidence for the coming season. Lets hope that BOTH of them get a game each :)

Well in a perfect world, they both would be in the team (the top 6 batsmen need to play and those are definitely up there).. but it isn't - so given one slot and two choices, I would pick Kaif.. for the simple reason that he has been more consistent lately.. and I dont really believe this thing about one-day performers not being able to perform in tests.. (KP being the latest example)..
